1. Why was Socrates sentence to dealth?
Socrates was sentenced to death of the charge of corrupting minds of the Athenian youth and impiety, which means “not believing in gods of the state”. I believe that Socrates was sentenced to death because of two reasons. Firstly, he offended the politicians of the Athens Government of Athens was, to some extent, built on a democracy. He thought that it was a fault to put Athens’s future in the hands of a group of people without wisdom and virtue. This act would somehow shook the governance and authority of government of Athens. That is the political reason. However, the second reason, which is more significant, is that he held the view of freedom of speech and atheism (at least in the eyes of the orthodox in Athens). He though that human should emphasize more on “knowing themselves”. It would draw the attention of people from understanding gods to understanding human. More importantly, he exercised the freedom of speech by debating to any Athenian citizens he saw in the square, spreading such though. This act would provoke the orthodox of the Athens.
2. Why is there a conflict (for some) between science and religion?
I believe there are two reasons for such conflict. First of all, the science relies on reasoning and observation, while religion relies on spiritual receiving. Take God as an example. Scientists would say that God cannot be observed (seen, touched, smelled, tasted and heard) by every normal man, so it cannot be proven (notice that scientists would not necessarily reject its existence). On the contrary, religion would admit the existence of God even though it is an experience by some people (though the amount is not minimal). Thus, scientists cannot understand why the religion is so sure they found something while the religion would confused by the scientists that they require an absolute reasoning and proving.
Secondly, it is because human structure is not capable in explaining everything. In the films provided, the man might not hear the high pitch sound provided by the apps in mobile phone while his family can, or, the people who are trapped in the Plato Cave would merely understand part of the world because they cannot move around as we do. These two examples show that human’s understanding of the world is restricted by the structure of human body. So, when religion claims it found something that others cannot perceive, conflict arises.
