1. Why is understanding physics and the general rules of the universe so important in doing philosophy?
It is important to understand physics and the general rules of the universe in philosophy because the two are directly connected to one another. In order to understand physics, philosophical questions must be asked and to do this one must know how the world functions. The dictionary definition of physics is “the study of matter, energy and the interaction between them”, however, that is really saying that physics is about asking and trying to answer fundamental questions by observing and experimenting. Philosophy is defined as the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence. Understanding both physics and the general rules of the universe is important for philosophy because there will be a larger understanding and it will be more meaning knowing both pieces.
What is eliminative materialism? Provide three examples of it.
Eliminative materialism is a materialist position in the philosophy of mind and that people’s common-sense understanding of the mind is wrong and that certain classes of mental states that people believe in do not exist. Some examples from the films are about Thor the thunder god but in reality it was electrical magnetic current. Another example is spirits which cause diseases, which in reality was bacteria and viruses. Another example is one that was thought that tiny ghosts are pulling this or that muscle when in reality we learned that it was a central nervous system.
