1. Why is understanding physics and the general rules of the universe so important in doing philosophy?
Philosophy is a very broad subject, covering things from mathematics to natural science. Understanding physics is important because it can impact a philosopher’s way of thinking. Professor Lane said that you need to understand other subjects in order to fully understand philosophy. Some of those subjects could be physics, geometry, biology, and chemistry. Physics studies matter and motion through time and space along with force and energy. Philosophy is the study of fundamental and general questions that have to do with existence, reality, knowledge, values, mind, reason, and language. Philosophy and physics are two very different things. Using them both together can help solve some of the world’s greatest questions. According to the book, Quantum Weirdness, physics concerns that what we say about nature raises important questions about the study. Physics gave opportunity to many physicists like Einstein and Bohr to contribute their ideas and make their own theories. In order to fully understand philosophy, you must be able to grasp an understanding on everything from a physical and universal point of view. This is why it is important to understand physics and the general rules of the universe in doing philosophy.
2. What is eliminative materialism? Provide three examples of it.
Eliminative materialism is figuring something out by using science and math to get the solution instead of using common sense and claims that people's common understanding of the mind is wrong. This can mean that our common sense physiological framework of thinking if false or flawed. First example is trying to answer a question by going through all the types of sciences like geology, biology, chemistry and physics before giving up on the question. Second example of eliminative materialism is intelligent reductionism by reason and thought to figure out certain things about humans, matter, space and the atmosphere. Third example is if the question can’t be answered scientifically or by intelligent reductionism then “God did it". Many argue that this way of thinking doesn’t propose a real argument and consider the eliminative materialism to be false. From my understanding, eliminative materialism could also refer to the understanding that some beliefs don’t exist and people that think this way are called eliminative materialists.
