Question 1
Our consciousness creates an internal story or belief that may not be real. Our brain can generate virtual reality scenarios that we believe to be true but aren’t actually. The same stands true when we have dreams. At the time that we are dream it is our reality but when we wake we realize that our mind created it.
We read in Is this Universe an App that our consciousness creates these illusions to,” respond to a disparate array of problems before out sourcing them (hence the Darwinian advantage).”
In the film the Disneyland of Consciousness, the film maker gives us examples of how we are so easily convinced that certain animation is real when it isn’t. The elderly lady was so convinced the robot was an actor portraying Pres. Lincoln that she attempted to get his autograph.
Question 2
Our brain and consciousness have evolved much like how we have physically. Our brain does trick us to help protect us from danger and making mistakes. Just imagine a scenario, where we might chase a ball into the middle of the street. We visualize oncoming traffic and we look before moving ahead because we don’t want to get hit by the large speeding truck. We imagined that large speeding truck so that we don’t chase the ball without looking for possible traffic. Lesser animals like a dog, doesn’t have the brain power to think out or imagine the same way we can which puts it greater danger. Our consciousness is our virtual simulator. Our advantage over lesser animals is our ability to be aware of our surrounds and envisioning scenarios before acting.
