Explain the virtual simulation theory of consciousness.
Essentially, although we are living in and observing reality, we are not able to predict what is going to happen in the future. We cannot determine what will happen at our next business meeting or our next interview, however we can easily mentally prepare. This would be virtual simulation of consciousness. We mentally act out and dialogue every possible scenario in order to determine which will be the best method of action to take. We are creating a virtual simulation in our minds to potentially increase our survival in the real world. In imagination, in consciousness, you can play as if it is real and project all sorts of endgame earnings to see which one will be to your advantage (Nueralsurfer. Brain Burn: Consciousness as a Virtual Simulator. Online Video. YouTube. YouTube 25 November, 2008). If we did not have consciousness to act as a virtual simulator and instead actually acted out any one of the possibilities, it would drastically decrease our ability to survive.
How does the brain trick us and for what benefit is it for our genetic survival?
When we look at an illusion, our brains perceive things as more or less than what it actually is. The way information from our eyes is being interpreted by our brains, may not always be accurate. Sometimes lighting or enhanced technology can allow us to trick ourselves into believing something is whole heartedly true, when it is actually not. In the video The Disneyland of consciousness: Exploring the Animatronic Image, a great example of how a combination of low-light and animatronics allowed for the animatronic pirate on a ride, appear to be a real person- an actor dressed in costume. In the same way, dreaming plays a similar role, our brains can allow a dream to feel so real, that it believes its own imagination (Nueralsurfer. The Disneyland of consciousness: exploring the animatronic image. Online Video. YouTube. YouTube 12 November, 2011). This is also in the same way that we can play out scenarios while daydreaming, this allows us to make better choices for better survival.
