1. How would you feel if you realized that you were just “stuff”, just this body, and that there was nothing “meta” physical about you? Be sure to use your “I” voice and present your reaction in an autobiographical framework. Also make pertinent references (when possible) to the film on mysterium tremendum.
A: Being told that you are just “stuff” should not be taken emotionally bad because at the end we all end up in a 85 by 30 inch box and/or 12 feet below ground. I would not get offended if someone looked deep down into my soul, and told me I was just a heavy body of “stuff”. I am well aware of who I am, and what defines me so, what others say really does not matter. You do not need anything or anyone telling you how much you are worth because if you do then haven’t done the most important step in life; which is to love yourself regardless.
2. using your own life as a template, provide two or more examples of Plato’s Allegory of the cave. Hint: think of those times in your life when you mistakenly believed something to be true or real but you later realized wasn’t. Be sure to think within the context of the movie.
A: Twelve years ago my father told me that if I was not in bed by 8 PM an enormous three-eyed monster would come out from under my bed, and take all children who were awake past 8 PM. I later discovered that my father was only lying to get me to eat, do homework, and shower early so, I can have a good night’s rest. Which is something I should start believing again to get my responsibilities done early, and not 10 PM late.
A: My brother is a huge fan of scary movies only because I am not. So, in 2004 he decided to sit me through the entire movie The Grudge. If you despise scary movies as much as I did you’ll agree that what my brother did was torture, but I mean if he did then we wouldn’t be siblings. Anyways, when we finished the awful movie, I developed a sort of panic when being in the shower. After, watching that movie I was terrified of taking a shower with my eyes closed as I lathered my hair because I believed that as my eyes were closed something scary was standing right in front of me. However, I overcame that belief when I got shampoo into my eye, which stung really badly because I was such a child in believing that someone was in the shower staring right into my eye.
