Week 1
Question 1
According to the book, “How Socrates Died”, Socrates was sentence to death because he was convicted for corrupting the youth and impiety. He believed that those were false and the real reason was the enemies that he had made by disproving the wisdom of many. Socrates explains in great deal his beliefs in his Apology. He dies by ingesting poison.
The first charge against was impiety. He was accused of “acting wickedly, and is criminally curious in searching into the things under the earth, and in the heavens, in making the worse appear the better cause…” (How Socrates Died pg. 31). Socrates claims that he was simply trying to prove that no man was wise in all things and thus supporting that only God was. (How Socrates Died pg. 35) Socrates states that he did this in “obedience to the god”. (How Socrates Died pg. 34)
In proving the lack of wisdom of the different factions, he made angered many. He stated that many of the youth imitated his methods of disproving the lack of wisdom of the “intellectuals”. Of course this led to additional hatred of him. Accusations were made against after that which were made of all philosophers at the time. (How Socrates Died pg. 35)
Socrates refuses Crito’s escape plan and is given poison to take by the prison guard. He takes the poison and dies after it reaches his heart.
Question 2
According to the book the Great Mystery, the conflict has to do with the interpretation of the word MATTER. Science shows that everything on the planet is made up of particles of matter and human beings are no different. The author goes on to explain that we shouldn't necessarily view our matter as not being special because not all matter is equal. He analyzes the quality of paper in an old book. The configuration of those same atoms can make up an infinite multitude of other things that make up our world. (The Great Mystery pg. 5).
Ultimately the conflict between science and religion stems from their fundamental beliefs. Religion is based on faith of a higher power and a bigger meaning and purpose to life. Science is based on facts and theory based on Mathletics, Physics and other highly complex sciences.
