1. Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
I do think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future. First, When artificial intelligence can replace more human labor, it can cause problem if no proper actions being conducted. Another risk Ray Kurzweil mentioned in the film is that terrorists can use the technology to make biological virus.
According to the film “Ray Kurzweil: The Coming Singularity”, computer is expected to be able to simulate all brain regions including emotional intelligence. Stan Franklin mentioned in his article, “The authors review noted philosophical positions within the field, including Daniel Dennett’s strong AI position that consciousness is substrate neutral and so computers modeled after the human brain could have awareness.” Although this idea is challenged by Hubert Dreyfus who thinks AI won’t match human’s intelligence, I think it is still possible that something called superintelligence can emerge and go out of human’s control. Superintelligence is believed having higher IQ than human and it can update and develop automatically. If it goes out of control, it will be a significant problem.
2. How has technology impacted your life?
Technology significantly impacted my life. I could say that if I were forbidden to use technology, my life would become difficult. For example, computer and network make online class possible so that I can take class from two different colleges without going out of my home. It saves time and money and it’s even environmental friendly because I don’t need to drive myself to school. I am able to chat with my family in other countries through facetime. I do a lot of online shopping. Again, it saves me a lot of time and energy. In addition, I am able to purchase goods from all over the world. However, there are downsides in my life because of technology. For me, because I use texts so much that I sometimes feel awkward when speak with a person face to face. All in all, technology is a double-edged sword, but it impacted my life significantly.
