1. Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
2. How has technology impacted your life?
Artificial intelligence is a sub branch of computer science with the goal that enable the development of computers that are able to do things normally done by people, to be specific, with human intelligence. The idea of recreate another version of yourself sounds astonishing but it's not too distant from reality. For instance, cells in the stomach turn over in weeks, blood cells lasts days to months. Thus, in a matter a short time another You has been recreated. However, I think the process of replicate human consciousness to a machine-being will be difficult to achieve. In the reading Einstein's Wastebasket, Penrose claimed, "human brain possesses 'transcendent capabilities'…., and so consciousness is unique to the human and it cannot be replicated in a computer" (Diem-Lane,6). Many people believe that the more we understand the anatomy of the human brain and what each part does the more ability, "we may have to digitally replace it, enhance it, or repair a deficiency" (Diem-Lane,12). As amazing as it sounds, I never thought the existence of AI could give human a benevolent and advantages future. Elon Musk once stated that artificial intelligent is "our biggest existential threat". I also agree with Bill Gates and Stephen Hawking on the statement that AI is like "a computational Pandora's box my unleash digital monsters" (Diem-Lane, 34). As far as I concern about artificial intelligence, I do think it will be a significant problem in the future, if their development explode sometime in the future. Such a system could potentially undergo recursive self-improvement, triggering an intelligence explosion leaving human intellect far behind. The AI programmed may aim to do something beneficial, but if we unable to control it, it could develops in a destructive way.
Technology is an essential need in everybody's life. Without technology, many things would not be able to materialize. As for me, I believe technology has made my life more enjoyable and more convenience. It's a strange feeling to try live without computer or even remember what life was like before the internet. In these modern days, we usually don't write letter or looking up something from a 500+ pages dictionary anymore. Instead, we would look up everything through the internet. Just like Kurzweil said in video "Information technology grows exponentially,…they are double over 1 year, 11 months" (Ray Kurzweil). For the students like me, technology is the best way of learning because it's a convenient way to search a lot of academic information. For an instance, I'm taking this online course through the use of internet and computer, they are technology that help me accomplish this class without my physical appearance in a classroom. Technology makes me to communicate with my friends easily using instant messaging and Facebook. I use my Facebook status to source group opinions whenever I need to ask my friends for advice. And if something newsworthy happens? Thanks to Facebook, I know it right away. Technology has changed my life for the better. I’m so thrilled to be in immediate contact with those I love all the time. I do aware of the risks for the growing dependence on technology, however, I could not give up on my daily usage of computer or phone because they are my basis needs.
