Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
I think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem if we make technological advances that are unethical and immoral. In Einstein’s Wastebasket, it mentions uploading one’s own mind into a computer will be near possible in the future. If we’re capable of reaching this goal, “an obvious ethical question arises out of this: if you delete an uploaded self are you committing murder?” (Lane, 70). I believe as a society, we are not yet ready to answer this kind of question. The limitless potential of A.I could lead to questions like this very particular one. It’s unimaginable how we could easily become subjected to this advance life form and be so ill prepared to deal with its consequences. As Chalmers argues, “we could become these superintelligent creatures by enhancing and augmenting ourselves or uploading ourselves” (Lane, 70). At what point I ask, does this enhancement become abuse? A.I could just be another tool that we will use to try to reach some unrealistic portrait of ourselves. The film The Complexity of Consciousness / A Glimpse from the Mind of Christof Koch asks the question, “Why should we abrogated when it comes to consciousness?” Our consciousness could be done away with if we decide to make decisions that we know are wrong. Even the smallest feeling or guilt or uneasiness is enough of a sign to acknowledge that we’ve compromised our principles.

How has technology impacted your life?
Technology has impacted my life greatly. The film, Ray Kurzweil: The Coming Singularity, Ray mentions that “when I was an undergraduate we all shared computer at MIT that took up half a billing.” Now, a computer has become a necessity for any individual. For instance, what student doesn’t own a computer? I do my homework online. I do research online. My education has not come from lectures and teachers in classrooms. I use PDFs instead of physical textbooks to learn material. I use online videos; if I don’t understand what I’m learning, I find someone else online that explains the same material, only better. Also, I’m an avid movie watcher. In the film, Is the Universe an App? Exploring Neural Trickery and the Illusion of Certainty, the narrator explains that “audience worldwide could be convinced that a fake tiger could be so real that even when the illusion is explained he could still vehemently argue otherwise.” Even what I’m watching has been the product of advance progress in the field of math, science, computers, etc. We’re doing things that not too long ago someone dreamed up and are making a reality. The idea of the something unimaginable is now physical possible. So the advances we make as society has given me the belief that even the wildest dreams could one day be attainable.
