1. Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
I think artificial intelligence will not be a significant problem in the future if it is built with the utmost precaution. It has huge amounts of potential to become a significant problem. We still years and decades away from creating something that will allow us to recreate a fully functional human conscious within a robot or in a technology outside of a human, and there is already so many warnings of caution which can be seen throughout the “Einstein’s Wastebasket” reading. Many of the readings that Dr. Lane reviewed contained highly educated people speaking their opinions and theories about artificial intelligence. Although many seem to be opposed to the idea of creating artificial intelligence because of the potential dangers of it, I do think that it is a risk worth taking. I do believe creating artificial intelligence must be done with the utmost caution and attention to detail. If we can implant normal human values such as honesty, integrity, and what is right from wrong, then artificial intelligence will not be a problem. I always thought of artificial intelligence has just a “Siri” or a person that you could talk to and it could respond like a human. I never thought about creating a human mind and thought process, and then being able to compute it at the speeds of a computer. There is much that can be learned from artificial intelligence, and it would allow us to advance as a civilization quicker into a new era of technology. Saying this, I do think that artificial intelligence should not be made something accessible to the common public and no software of artificial intelligence “prototypes” should be released to the public because of the ways that people can use artificial intelligence negatively or for those that do not understand it properly and do not program it properly. Obviously in my writing there is much I do not know about the technology and how artificial intelligence will work so most of it is based on inference and guesses. My overall point is that artificial intelligence has the ability to pose a significant threat in our future, but I do not think it will because I believe we will take the necessary precautions to ensure the proper and cautious creation of artificial intelligence.

2. How has technology impacted your life?
I can not imagine my life without technology. As I sit here typing this essay for my online philosophy class, I realize how truly dependent I am on technology. I feel confused and lost when separated from my phone, and I feel disconnected from the rest of the world. When asked if your house was burning and you could only retrieve three material possessions from your house, what would you take, I remember instantly answering: my phone, my computer, and my car keys. That, in itself, shows how dependent I am on technology. Yet, I do believe technology has impacted my life and most people’s lives positively. Obviously, there are downsides since going outside is not as common as it should be as kids and adults are stuck in their houses playing video games, on the computer, or watching T.V, it also has been able to bring people together. Social media has allowed me to connect and stay in contact with friends and family from across the nation and world. I have been able to stay more up-to-date with current news by reading and watching on my computer. More specifically to me, technology has allowed me to easily retrieve information and study materials needed for classes, allowed me communicate and stay in contact with anyone and everyone quickly, and it has allowed me to appreciate going outside more. Some days after sitting in front of a T.V. or computer screen all day, I will go outside and play with my dog and appreciate it much more. Although many would say you should spend more time outside and appreciate the time you have with technology, our world is not really like that. I love making time to go out and explore, go hiking, and go exercise outdoors, and many times this love increases by the time I spend cooped up with my phone and computer inside.
