1. Explain the virtual stimulation theory of consciousness?
- According to the reading, Is the Universe an App, it is said, “The feeling that consciousness is not physical or that consciousness is distinct from our body is a very common one.” When it comes to consciousness it’s about being aware. Also consciousness is having the ability to feel, awareness, not be blinded by certain things which leads to a virtual stimulator in our head. This stimulator gives us these kinds of feelings that we feel in an everyday life. These feelings that we feel or see are what our consciousness wants us to see or believe. In the video, Brain Burn: Consciousness as a Virtual Stimulator, it is said that, “Consciousness is literally a virtual stimulator and that is why it has been so helpful allowing humans to survive globally.” For example, instead of going with something at the top of our head, be aware of your surroundings and don’t be blinded by what’s the great part of something. People think life is so great and nothing bad happens, but they need to open there eyes and realize there’s more to it.
2. How does the brain trick us and for what benefit is it for our genetic survival?
- When it comes to the brain I believe it does trick us. One thing that can definitely mess with us is illusions. For example, when looking at certain pictures it will either start to see the pictures moving or the drawings inside move, or also start to see things pop up in the picture. The reason this happens is because of how the brain works and definitely because it tricks us. The brain gives us the ability to fill in empty spots that we didn’t see before. The benefit for our genetic survival according to the video, Brain Burn: Consciousness as a Virtual Stimulator, it is said that, “we come up with varying questions to ask of the world and its participants.” For example, we come up with all these things that we want to know about and with the help from the brain can sometimes give us an answer that we didn’t know we could answer.
