1. Explain the virtual simulation theory of consciousness.
2. How does the brain trick us and what benefit it is for our genetic survival?
If there is anything about which we feel sure, it is that the world we experience is real. As Is The Universe an App? states that our brain is a simulator base on what "we see, hear, touch, and smell results of how our central nervous system processes both external and internal stimuli and then reconstructs a virtual environment (Lane, 106). Our consciousness could consider as the continuous story we tell ourselves, about what we did and why we did it. It is often inaccurate veneer rationalizing a mountain of unconscious processing. In reading “Is the Universe an App?” the theory of consciousness as a virtual is discussed as two forms of awareness. The first state of awareness allow animals to within their present state of beings. The second state of awareness allow us (humans) to recall past memories, experiences, while also being able to planning for future. Gerald Elderman describes our "consciousness of being conscious" as our an evolutionary advantage that give us until today. It can be said that "Consciousness is a virtual simulator, apparently evolved over eons of time to enable mammals with higher brain functions to “in source” varying options of how to respond to a disparate array of problems (Lane, 107). Conscious experience is a virtual model of the world, a dynamic internal simulation, which in standard situations cannot be experienced as a virtual model because it is phenomenally transparent, we “look through it” as if we were in direct and immediate contact with reality. The conscious mind of human beings, which has evolve over million years, now get woven into systems that could create every possibility realities in our mind.
Our brain decides how we perceive everything around us. It informs our decisions, guiding us through the world around extremely well, except it also can trick us. One of the first idea is the deception in our mind through the Indian concept of "Maya". According to Is The Universe an App?, ancient India spoke of this as "maya". Often can be understand as "illusion", the word is better understood as "delusion". We notice the things that our brain thinks are important and can process very complex information quickly because our brain sometimes takes shortcuts. Normally we don’t even notice these shortcuts but visual illusions have helped us understand lots of the shortcuts used by the brain. This is knowledge that influences the way we interpret and experience the world. It is been said that "Deception is part and parcel of nature and is an intrinsic and necessary feature of human existence" (Lane, 98). Our brains are design to invoke varying camouflages and adapting skills for survival. If our brain didn’t help us to come up with solutions to help us to predict cases that could threaten our survival then we would have not survived until today. In the same context as the previous question, it is true that "our consciousness is literally a virtual simulator, and that is why it's been so helpful for allowing human to survive globally" (Brain Burn video). With imagination and consciousness, humans can play different choices as if it is real and then project what we see as advantages. In the end, "any reproducing DNA that can develop a virtual simulator within itself has a huge advantage over a genetic strand that cannot" (brain burn video).
