WEEK FIVE ESSAYS: Digital Philosophy and A.I.
1. Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
Although artificial intelligence may serve useful purposes in our everyday life, I believe that artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future. Artificial intelligence collides with our ethical, political, and religious society. It would be extremely controversial if our existing lives were incorporated with artificial intelligence.
In Einstein’s Wastebasket, Diem-Lane states that “the first step is to figure out how the brain does it and then build an artificial machine that has an equally effective mechanism for causing consciousness” (12). Artificial intelligence would then be a substitute to the human brain. Human brains wouldn’t evolve and grow as there would be nothing to research or discover or learn anymore. Because robots would take the place of human manual efforts and labor, many people would be out of jobs, which could lead to poverty and thus, crime in the world. I believe that artificial intelligence will do more harm than good in our society.
2. How has technology impacted your life? Be sure to support your answers with references to the required readings and class forum.
Technology has greatly impacted my life. For example, I can take an Introduction to Philosophy class online and receive full units for it. I can read the course syllabus, e-mail the professor, create my own website while reading the required books and watching the assigned films all without stepping foot in a classroom or on campus. I can also check my grades anywhere anytime. Without technology, we would be less efficient and less effective in our daily tasks. We have been able to accomplish more and achieve more successes in various academic fields with technology.
In the Cambridge Handbook of Artificial Intelligence excerpt in Einstein’s Wastebasket, it is noted that “while computer technology has no doubt become more progressive, the question remains whether we will one day have full-blown artificial intelligence. The idea that we can actually create a being that may have consciousness and far surpass our own intelligence is astounding, but the ramifications of such a creation, whether it be our saving grace or demise, are still unknown to us” (63). If a robot took over the learning process for me, I would not learn as much about philosophy as I would like. Philosophers and scientists would not be needed as there would be nothing to question anymore if something else was taking the capacity of the human brain for us.
