1. Why is the theory of evolution so important in understanding how human beings behave? The theory of evolution is where the concept of natural selection comes in, because natural selection means that there is variation. The variation for a person to be wired to be more afraid, the variation for a person to be more confident... Certain beings may be more adaptable to certain conditions than others. Offspring that exist, exist only because of that advantage found in the genetic variation, and thus the cycle continues, with the offspring most likely inheriting the original mentality.
2. Which questions do you think evolutionary theory cannot answer? Be sure to support your answers with references to the required readings and films. There are some questions that evolutonary theory cannot answer, as admitted by Darwin himself in "Evolutionary Limits." Some limitations to natural selection include the inexplicable higher law that is different from any law of our knowledge, which leads to the mysterious origin of consciousness and sensation. Evolutionary theory also does not explain the origin of a conscience, as in, feeling guilt or shame over wrongdoing, (although "wrongdoing" may be subjective). (p. 34)
