1. Explain the virtual simulation theory of consciousness.
The virtual simulation theory of consciousness is a theory that shows how consciousness has led to a greater ability to survive for humans. The ability to think, to dream, to daydream, to imagine, has greatly helped humans survive. This is because, in times of danger, humans have been able to think through using their consciousness or imagination, different scenarios on how to deal with the situation, and the best way to deal with. This ability has allowed us to survive. Rather than just doing whatever first comes to mind, or not being able to think and just act, we have been able to make decisions that allow us to better survive on Earth. In the video, “Brain Burn: Consciousness as a Virtual Simulator” it states how the brain’s architecture dictates how we perceive and understand the world. The virtual simulator of our consciousness allows us to make sense and understand the world in our realities. In the reading, Is the Universe An App, the professor states how consciousness, the virtual simulator, allows animals with higher brain functions on the “varying options” on how to respond to a problem. It is the ability for an animal to be aware of their awareness.

2. How does the brain trick us and for what benefit is it for our genetic survival?
In the “Is the Universe an App” reading, in the chapter about “Maya: The Physics of Deception,” the professor gives a great point about how the physics of deception works to benefit us. First off, our brain deceives us through the use of our five sense. All we see in our reality of the world and can experience stems from these five senses. We now know that there are more ways the world can be experienced through infrared and UV light and what not. There may be other ways to experience the world and a different reality that we just do not have the appendages for. We are deceived from a total reality or understanding of the world because, first off, we do not have the appendages to pick up those senses, and secondly, because it is not necessary for our survival. We have what we need to survive, and although we may be deceived of a higher understanding or more complete reality, that may overwhelm us or even hurt or survival on Earth. Aldon Huxley stated that our brain would not be able to process all incoming streams of information if we had more senses and more ways of experiencing reality, and we would be stuck in a state of “perpetual catatonia”
