Why is the theory of evolution so important in understanding how human beings behave?
The theory of evolution is so important because it attempts to explain the origins of life. Philosophy is the study of existence and knowledge so evolution explaining the origin of life allows philosophers to further understand human behavior. According to the theory of evolution by Charles Darwin, organisms that contain heritable traits that are better suitable for the environment when compared with other members of their species are more likely to survive and pass on those traits. So, evolution is key to understanding why human beings behave in a certain manner because this theory shows that our minds are constantly developing. This can be seen in the shift of widespread belief that the natural phenomenons that occur were due to gods, such as Thor, to a more scientific and factual based approach. Also, according to “Evolution Explained in Four Minutes”, humans are “books of information” that have survived competition. This can be used to determine where someone came from and help understand his or her behavior.
Which questions do you think evolutionary theory can not answer?
The theory of evolution can answer many questions such as why there is variation of the same species over time and why some species become extinct. However, due to a lack of evidence, evolutionary theory can’t answer some questions. I think the evolutionary theory doesn’t answer how life originated. The theory explains natural selection, and the competition we must overcome to reproduce but isn’t very clear on how life actually started. In the video, “Darwin’s DNA”, it shows how science falsifies what the consciousness conjures up while for religion things are often accepted without testing. In this case, there is a lack of testing on both sides. In many religions it is believed that God created humans and animals. Due to the overall lack of evidence, evolutionary theory can only theorize the origin of humans.
