Question 1:
Although Socrates is very well respected in today’s world as one of the greatest Philosophers, during his time on earth, he was not seen in this light by many. In How Socrates Dies, author Plato is able to show how Socrates was put to death for his independent views, which were frowned upon in the times of his existing, and punishable by death. During the time of life religion was very important and not to be questioned, which is exactly what Socrates did and made others do. Socrates did not cave during his trials, and when speaking to Euthyphro, Crito, and Melitus, he stays strong on his belief that that what he is doing is not wrong, but helpful to the youth. He made others belief in more than just the Gods, and to made them really think about their views and decisions. Leaving them very impacted. Since Socrates was unapologetically about his ways and views, and so convincing, he was seen as a threat, and was not understood. Just as in history what is misunderstood is feared, and often terminated.
Question 2:
While Science has been around much longer than Religion, the impact that Religion has on people is tremendous. Religion is not a science and most of the belief systems that people have is not based on fact, yet it is seen by these people as factual. Do to this, science and Religion conflict with each other. In The Great Mystery , the authors illustrates how there is so much that is unknown when it comes to matter and the idea of consciousness. However, when it comes to these two things, scientist have their views on it, still discovering and learning new things, whereas most religions claim to have these things already figured out. In the videos Limits of Science, depicts that science does have its limits of understanding, yet in Emergence of Rationality, depicts how the beliefs of the time also change overtime. Science and religion will always conflict unless, as stated in The Great Mystery by Micheal Shermer, there is way that science and religion do not contradict each other, which not likely to happen because both the views of many people would have to change.
