Hello, my name is Victoria Hopman and I am currently a Journalism major finishing up my GE'S. I enjoy the outdoors (beach, hikes, mountains), sports (Angels, Lakers), and reading good books (should read more). On my free time when I am not doing the above I like to make random donuts trips in the middle of the night with my friends, and go in the jacuzzi when it's raining (weird, I know). I work as a helper (babysitter) for a family in Pasadena, I take care of two kids- ages 6 and 9. And in the summer I am a Swim Coach for a local Country Club. I am excited for this class!
Why was Socrates sentenced to death?
Socrates was sentenced to death because he refused to acknowledge Gods and eternal life. Socrates was a Greek philosopher in Athens respected among many scholars. However, his innovative and radical thinking threated the government’s power. As told in the video THE LIMITS OF SCIENCE, “Limits of our skull, are the limits of our understanding” (Neuralsurfer). Socrates was an avid believer in this statement. He only believed what he could understand and explain; therefore, disagreeing with the then integrated church and state. Socrates also didn’t take part in town discussions regarding moral guidance, and proper actions. Instead, he studied his students; pursuing self-liberating answers. He came to the conclusion that people don’t knowingly do wrong. It is a combination of consciousness and moral character already predestined in there souls. As you could imagine this theory didn’t go over well with the church. The church felt threatened by his thoughts, intellect and discussions. Leading to unbearable tension between him and the officials of Athens. Ultimately, leading to his death.
Why is there a conflict (for some) between science and religion?
Science and religion have been unable to coexist for centuries now. The two have viewed the beginnings of this earth and eternal life very differently. Throughout science there are many theories like the Einstein Limit of Light Theory that states you can only see so far with a telescope. Now, why does this matter? Scientist in all fields have come to the conclusion we as humans are, “limited to the constraints of our minds” and “stuck with neural constraints”. Meaning, they don’t believe what can’t be proven or seen. According to historical text God once asked a priest to exactly double the size of a cube. However, mathematically it was impossible to do so, leaving the mathematicians questioning the existence of this “God” that requested an impossible problem. These are just a few examples of the conflicts science and religion have faced. Scientist believe in the black or white of existence such as matter; but as explained in The Great Mystery, maybe we are using outdated knowledge and understandings of the true capability matter have. Being religious is about having Faith in a higher power to guide your life on earth and eternally. Faith means believing in a power you cannot see or prove (grey); rather it is something you feel. As said by a scientist in a class video, “the more faith you have [the more you don’t know]”. This may be the greatest conflict between religion and science.
