1. Why was Socrates sentenced to death?
The reasons Socrates was sentenced to death was based on there being two different reasons. The first reason was because he "corrupted the Athenian youth by his teachings". Another reason The second reason Socrates was sentenced was because he did not believe in the gods recognized by the State. He was accused of being an atheist. In the text it explains "The second charge he meets by a cross-examination of his accuser, Melitus, whom reduces to the dilemma with corrupting the youth designedly" (2). However they couldn't sentence him to death because of this charge and they felt bad. Although he was sentenced to death the never went through with killing him he chose to die because he felt it was his time. I believe Socrates chose death because like J.P.S said "Freedom is what you do with whats been done to you".
2. Why is there a conflict (for some) between science and religion?
Science and religion have always been in conflict with one another. Science and religion each represent completely opposite arguments. Science is about how nature controls how the universe works and religion is about how God controls how the universe works. Science is based on observation and what we can prove. Religion on the other hand makes arguments analytical in nature and requires faith. The reasoning though may not seem similar. A scientist might call this as the order in the universe or the Energy, which is transmitted in the world we live in. Religions like to look this ultimate reality as God and the faith behind the religions. This will always be a topic of conflict since no one has hard evidence of one or the other.
