1. Why was Socrates sentenced to death?
According to the book “How Socrates Died”, Socrates was sentenced to death because he was found guilty of two crimes. Socrates was accused of not believing in the gods recognized by the state and for corrupting the Athenian youth with the things that he taught them. During his testimony he made it clear that he would never stop philosophizing in public. It is possible that Socrates saying that was the reason for him being found guilty since philosophy is the root of the allegations. Socrates even pointed out during his testimony that he was in danger of dying because of his studying of Philosophy and questioning everything. Socrates defended himself by saying that everything that his accusers had said was untrue but did not articulate his actual innocence of the crimes, which seems to be intentional. Socrates was found guilty of the crimes after a vote was conducted by the judges and was then sentenced to death.
2. Why is there a conflict (for some) between science and religion?
It seems that the main source of conflict between science and religion exists because religion is a set way to believe in something. Everything is taken at face value. If you add science into it, things begin to get questioned which could lead to religious beliefs being disproved. No one wants to hear that something they have always believed in is wrong and have their religion discredited. Just as it states in “The Great Mystery: Matter vs Spirit”, some feel that some philosophical findings contradict the bible. The same book and the video “Mysterium Tremendum: If Wonder has Form, What is the Matter?” explains how people feel better about being made of light and in a sense gives them meaning and something to believe in. It seems that the religious aspect needs to just stay simple for some. There is no need or want for any in depth explanation for why something is how it is.
