(7) Explain the virtual simulation theory of consciousness. According to the book, “Is the Universe An App”, the theory of consciousness “requires a judicious and balanced use of all four validity claims (truth, truthfulness, cultural meaning, functional fit), each of which is redeemed under the warrant of the three strands of valid knowledge acquisition (injunction, apprehension, confirmation) carried out across the dozen or more levels in each of the quadrants—which means, in shorthand fashion , the investigation of sensory experience, mental experience, and spiritual experience: the eye of flesh, the eye of mind, and the eye of contemplation: all-level, all quadrant.” (p. 2) The meaning of this is explaining that in order for simulation of theory of consciousness, researchers must engage in order to transform their consciousness. The virtual simulation theory of consciousness explains that we live in a world based on sensory, as said in “Is the Universe an App?”, that “what we see, hear, touch, and smell are the results of how our central nervous system processes both external and internal stimuli and then reconstructs a virtual environment in which we react accordingly.” This shows us that what we experience through our senses, we develop our consciousness to believe those ideals. Our world is virtually what we see it to be, and can be perceived so differently by many.
(8) How does the brain trick us and for what benefit is it for our genetic survival? I believe that our brain can trick us in several ways. It can trick us into thinking we see things differently than what they are, or are we really seeing them correctly. Everyone has different perspectives, views on reality and we question is this reality. For example, some people may think they are fat, but they may really be healthy and just are not satisfied with the way their body looks, although someone else may view them as someone who has a great figure. It’s all about perspective the way the brain stimulates these realities. The idea of being “without” as mentioned in the short film, “Brain Burn: Consciousness as a Virtual Simulator”, is really all in our heads. Some people think they need a certain aspect of life to go on with their lives, for example, some people are addicted to shopping, or are alcoholics, drug addicts of think they cannot live their lives without a certain significant other. This is all what the brain tricks us into thinking we need for our genetic survival, when in reality we need basic things like food, water, stability and so on.
