1. Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
I think that artificial intelligence will be both a blessing and a curse in the future. The proposed idea of the GPI in the first couple of pages of Digital Philosophy is truly terrifying. The scary thing is, it is not far from the truth and it is only a matter of time before people are chipped or have barcodes as projected in the movies. It would be scary to know that by wearing special glasses, a complete stranger could potentially know everything there is to know about you. Your life as you know it would no longer be private. But there are definite benefits! What if you knew ahead of time that that same stranger was going to rob you or had the track record of a criminal? You would be able to alter your interaction with said person and possibly avoid an altercation that may be detrimental to you or someone you know.
2. How has technology impacted your life?
“Already almost anybody with a smartphone (android or apple or otherwise) won’t leave home without one and if they do somehow forget their intelligent devices they will invariably turn their cars around to go secure it” (Lane, 5). This could not be a truer statement. I cannot begin to count the number of times that I have almost been late to wherever it was that I was heading to run home and grab my cell phone. Usually, it is attached to my hip, or at least in plain sight, within an arm’s reach at all times. During down times at work or school, I am constantly checking my email or FaceBook. The unfortunate thing about technology and advances in artificial intelligence is how it impacting our children. My four year old daughter knows how to work my iPhone better than I do myself. When I was her age, I enjoyed playing outside and riding bicycles but the children these days would rather be glued to their tablets. The games and apps that are offered can be educational but I think it is also important for children to enjoy the outdoors. Technology has impacted my life by making it so that we never smell the roses-literally!
