Week Five
1. Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
Personally I believe artificial intelligence can cause tons of problems in the future, but it can also help society improve. I believe that that my problem from artificial intelligence is completely derived of fear of the unknown and Hollywood’s interpretation. However, Ray Kurzweil makes a great point in his video, The Coming Singularity, this technology is not from an alien invasion coming from a different planet it is coming from within our civilization to improve society. Technology can help us improve society, but it can also harm us if we are not cautious. The devises and technology we are already using everyday in a positive manner can also be manipulated to be harmful to society if people choose to use them in that manner. Ray used a very good example in his talk “technologies that are empowering us to reprogram biology away from cancer and heart disease can be used by a terrorist to reprogram a biological virus to be more deadly.” It is not bad to develop and push society forward with technology but we must proceed with caution for worst case scenarios.
2. How has technology impacted your life?
I will be the first to admit I have become completely dependent on technology. Meaning technology has had a large impact in my life. Starting at birth I was born premature so the advancement in medicine kept me alive to today writing my responses on this website. My life is completely intertwined with the advancement of technology like many people in our society. Many people believe it has gotten worse with the advancement of smart phones and WIFI, but I believe technology has impacted everyone throughout time. Although, technology may have not been as advanced as it is now, everyone throughout history has relied on new technological advancements in their own time. Many people do not consider light technology, however at one point in time it was. Technology has an impact on everyone’s life in one way or another.
