WEEK 5
1. Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
We live in a world that continues to progress with research and technology and there is no doubt that artificial intelligence will be prevalent in the future. I am indifferent to think artificial intelligence may or may not be a problem in the future. There are pro’s and cons to a lot of things, in which one may outweigh the other or not . Ray Kurzweil states that there are dangers that come with robotics and computers, viruses, and abusing biotechnology need to be addressed. While there are a number of benefits mentioned in “Einstein's Wastebasket”, such as repairing our brains digitally, healing internally or enhancing intelligence. Though these benefits sound great, it seems a bit weird to me to go against the natural way that was originally intended. Using computers for diseases is one thing, but enhancing intelligence seems a bit too far. People were naturally made with their own traits and personalities that make them unique, and intelligence is an amazing quality to have, but if everyone were intelligent what difference does it make? Will this then lead to disaster with people wanting too much computer inputs to be more intelligent than another? Kaku also mentions that “Immortality might also be achieved” which I can see being a problem in the future (Diem- Lane, p.12). I believe we were meant to live and die, that this one lifetime is worth every moment. Living forever seems undesirable to me, existance, growing and aging will no longer have meaning.

2. How has technology impacted your life?
Technology has played a huge part in my life though I am somewhat ashamed of it. I rely on technology for a number of things like the GPS, phone, internet and many others. I try to limit it so that I can actually experience the world around me. Technology has been very harmful to our environment such as in the case of consuming energy or cutting down trees. It has consumed our very human character, often times people are glued to their phones, xboxes, tv’s and no longer experience things or people like we used to. Technology has also been a contributor to violence, with the creation of bombs or land mines that are designed to kill people. More often than not there are cases of thousands or millions that have died from technology. Call me old fashioned but I love the way it used to be when technology played only a small part in people's lives. I believe that technology is being abused and people are addicted.
