1. Why is the theory of evolution so important in understanding how human beings behave?
Through the theory of evolution -- natural selection, we can see the complexity of the behavior of organisms. By knowing where we came from and what we went through to get where we are, we can better realize who we are. Contrary to the religious belief of God creating the world and man and all that followed, we can scientifically know that we are all related to each other and are responsible for our own actions. We can also explore ideas with an open mind and look into the studies of DNA and genetics to further our amazement with science. We can see that as different gene pools from couples come together with resulting mutations and “mistakes” over many generations, people with have different mental and philosophical make-ups. For example, computer programing uses the binary code mention in Darwin 101 that is in the background of the computer interface. The level we can see by our eyes and what is hidden behind what we see is amazing. The analysis of things beyond who we are is exactly why evolution is so important in understanding human beings and the fundamental of universe.
In the book Evolutionary Limits, it quotes the Alfred Russel Wallace article that, “But let us not shut our eyes to the evidence that an overruling Intelligence has watched over the action of those laws, so directing variations and so determine their accumulation…the indefinite advancement of our mental and moral nature” (23).
2. Which questions do you think evolutionary theory cannot answer?
First, Darwin and Wallace co-discovered evolutionary theory. Later Wallace thought that there was limitation to evolutionary theory because there exists a, “high order of organization” that is impossible to explain with evolution. Wallace’s thoughts were more spiritual in explaining consciousness.
Evolutionary theory cannot explain human intelligence and spiritualism. Evolutionary theory cannot explain why we think. Why did early man use fire? Why human being persuade art like cave dwellers paint on the walls of their caves? How did languages develop and indeed different languages in different geographical areas? Why did man need to communicate? Why do two human brains think differently? In Evolutionary Limits, professor Lane concluded that “however, even though Wallace was a strong advocate of the persuasive power behind natural selection, he felt that human consciousness specifically was of such a high order of organization … that natural selection was insufficient to explain it (9). Professor Lane also said of Alfred Wallace, the co-discoverer of natural selection that, “Wallace believed that there must be a guiding intelligence (something transcending the known laws of physics) that could produce human awareness and morality.” Does this not depend on a higher intelligence? Science cannot explain everything.
