1. Why is the theory of evolution so important in understanding how human beings behave?
The theory of evolution basically explains how our existence persists today. Through survival of the fittest species compete against one another in order to survive. Natural selection ultimately builds up to what we are today playing the key to evolution. As illustrated in The Genetic Connection film, we share much of our DNA with several plants and animals, especially with apes. Many different species are our ancestors. DNA is a helpful thing in tracing back our ancestry. It definitely shows our consciousness’ evolution. In Darwin 101, it notes, "Second nature is our ability to absorb such information and have the wherewithal to reconstruct models of varying probabilities about what this information means" (130). This not only allows us to simulate the reality, but also let us to analyze the situation. It "allow for better odds in our ultimate reactions to whatever stimuli or information we encounter" (130). That is saying our behavior depends on what our simulations are and which option we choose to act on. An understanding of the evolution of our consciousness and awareness will, therefore, help us to understand human beings behave. Humans change as we adapt to our surrounding and this alters our behaviors.

2. Which questions do you think evolutionary theory cannot answer? Be sure to support your answers with references to the required readings and films.
Evolution certainly explains how our existence works together in the naturalistic realm. However I believe evolution does not have an answer to what is a human’s purpose of existence in this world. Yes we have passed on our genes for various years but what comes out if it all? Is it all just a never-ending cycle, what is the ultimate purpose of evolution? In Darwin 101, Gerald Edelman says that [consciousness] simulates its environment in order to make the best probable guesses about how to respond to it”(121). However how does one know that one’s purpose in life is to give back? According to film, Darwin vs. Wallace, Wallace states, “natural selection could not have contributed to the complexity of the human mind”. The consciousness can be a major reason of why we all think differently but we can never know what we are destined to do. According to Darwin, he states, “the conscious mind came from unconscious mind. This also begs the question of where the intelligence has derived from”. Does it all come from a genetic mutation…Or what is it?
