1. Why is understanding physics and the general rules of the universe so important in doing philosophy?
Physics, also called “knowledge of nature,” studies energy and matter. This translates to many parts of life, sound, time, light, heat, ect. All things that are apart of life. Philosophy studies the fundamental nature of existence and understanding. Both topics can be interrelated, just like the commonalties discussed in the topic science vs. religion. To understand and study the idea of nature and existence it is helpful to understand the primary basis of our existence. Many of physics theories can explain societies evolution throughout time and explain how energy is the key to not only life by all concepts like light, heat or sound. All of these things come from energy, which is studied in physics. By understanding this, philosophers can grow on these concepts and explain how it effects our existence. On the reverse side philosophy is also essential to physics. Philosophers help develop theories about our universe that allow physicists prove or disprove ideas about our universe.
2. What is eliminative materialism? Provide three examples of it. Be sure to support your answers with references to the required readings and films.
In simplest idea eliminative materialism is an attempt to explain a situation. It is a process of elimination until scientist can determine an explanation, hence the word eliminative in the phrase. The process of elimination starts with academic’s ideals and ends with spiritual if their proof cannot be found in the academic world. This is explained in the second part of the phrase materialism which means to have a more physical or concrete evidence than a spiritual idea. The two definitions of the worlds in the phrase explain the ideal steps of the process of eliminative materialism.
This term has been used to revise many theories that were used in the past. First, the idea of the Greek god Thor originally was used to explain the lightening in the sky, but with the advancement of science, academia was able to prove the use of electromagnetic currents. Another example that was used in the second video of Eliminative Materialism was the nervous system. Originally it was explained by ghost traveling throughout our body. When science was more developed they eliminated different academic studies to use biology to explain the phenomenon. However, as society continues to advance into the idea of cognitive explanation using phycology they have began to explain it through spiritual ideals as well. This is when academic and spiritual ideals begin to combined. By eliminating other academic ideals and using psychology and spiritual ideas to explain things that are not fully understood by humanity yet. This process shows the full cycle of eliminative materialism. Explain human behavior by academic knowledge until it cannot be explained by science so they move into spiritual ideas.
