Essay Questions- Week 1 1. Why was Socrates sentenced to death? Socrates was sentenced to death because he did not believe in the same gods that the Athenian people believed in. He taught the people to question the beliefs of everyone else and that the Athenian people should think for themselves. He was charged with impiety to gods and corrupting the youth. Socrates was misunderstood by the Athenian people which may have pushed their desire to have him dead. The text “How Socrates Died” states that, “…Socrates refuses to make himself ridiculous by showing a fondness for life.” Socrates did not fight his sentenced death. Instead he embraced and accepted it. He was given a cup of poison which he welcomed. He drank the poison, reinsured his friends watching, walked around for a little while, and then calmly laid down and died. 2. Why is there a conflict (for some) between science and religion? There is a conflict between science and religion for the reason that science includes what has been proven already. On the other hand, religion includes things that have not been proven thus far and leave many things up to the interpretation of the person. The text “The Great Mystery Matter Vs. Spirit” states, “Perhaps this may explain why some scientists feel that the most promising way to tackle the subject of consciousness is by a process of eliminative materialism…The old joke is that if none of these academic disciplines can explain it then it is perfectly okay to say, “Well, God did it.”” (page 21). The text is explaining how we, as people, believe we understand the mind but in reality how much do we actually know. If people cannot even understand themselves then how can we truly understand what cannot be proven except by scripture.

Hi Kacey,
I agree with you on your second response, science vs. region. I think the book did a good job arguing how "well, God did it" can be over used to explain situations. On the other had how do we explain things that have yet to be proven or face things of unknown. It is such a hard line to walk in this age were so many things are being proven by science, yet there are so many things we have to face with uncertainty. I think this idea can be applied to those who are sick. In many cases we do have cures, but in others there is only treatment. There is a statistical possibility of fatality and survival, but how does a person find a way through that. In many cases people turn to faith as a positive solution when it becomes to difficult to listen to statistical analysis. At the end of the day, who are we to judge what others believe, as Athens did to Socrates.

Just like the video "The Limit of Science" says, the limit of scope is the limit of our understanding. People are curious about everything, so they need to figure out a way to explain things, and there is always a limit in science no matter how advanced tools we use to discover.

Hi Kacey, I agree in that science and religion have a lot of conflicts because of the everyday trials we see between the two. Religion can believe in a higher being without having to see it whereas science requires a hard definite answer to be able to make sense in everything. The eliminative method talks about getting rid of myths because of data we receive through data now. Socrates was one who was sentenced to death because of this debate of science and religion and we learned from Socrates that asking questions and learning about the world is a good thing!

Hi Kacey, I agree with your analyze. Science and religions have a lot of conflicts, and these conflicts happen in our daily life. Science is talking about something being proved, people can use science to improve their life, while religions are something we didn’t proved, we cannot find the truth, they are only something in people’s mind, people thought and believe them. Taking china as an example, some people with buddies’ religions believe the existence of ghost, while scientists don’t believe its existence.
