1. The virtual simulator theory of consciousness explains how we as humans are able to create different situations in our heads for the same situation. We do this so they can choose that option that has the best outcome for themselves. Lane discusses in his book that "We already intimately know that the brain is a virtual simulator because of dreaming where everything is hallucinated by us, even without us knowing how and why we are doing it. The waking state differs from dreaming because it receives external data streams from the nine orifices of our body, which allows for new material from which our brain can draw new maps about how to respond to any given situation" (Diem-Lane and Lane, 119). For example, if I did not study for a test and show up to class for the exam I have 2 options. I can either take the exam and hope I don’t fail or I can try and cheat. So after I rethink both options in my head I go with option number 1 since If I get caught it would be way worse. I would need to take full responsibility for not studying and receive the grade I deserve.
2. How does the brain trick us and for what benefit is it for our genetic survival?
After watching the assigned videos, I came across several conclusions to how our brain tricks us. According to the Disneyland of Consciousness Lane states, “only when we wake up do we acknowledge that everything that occurred in the dream was simulated by us.” The benefit for our genetic survival in our genetic makeup is that we have a physiological reaction, called "fight or flight response". During the reaction, our body reacts in 2 ways. Either flight where adrenaline will kick in and you will take off in the opposite direction of danger. The second reaction is fight which your body will prepare and get into survival mode. This is just one example of many that is in our genetic makeup.
