1. Explain the virtual simulation theory of consciousness.
Have you ever planned out the day in your head the night before or imagined how an important event was going to plan out in your head? Most likely yes; even as young children we were nervous about the first day of school and we play it out and imagined how it was going to go. Furthermore most likely what we imagined didn’t happen and some unexpectedly happened that altered everything. We as humans naturally simulate events and everything around us before it happened. So when we are in situations we have virtually went through it already and have the ability to react. Similarly to what Phil Jackson the former NBA coach has his players before NBA Finals games/series he would have his players sit in a dark room and mentally visualize what they will do throughout the game. This giving the players more confidence and helps them to be able to perform in high stress moments.
2. How does the brain trick us and for what benefit is it for our genetic survival?
When thinking what is the bodies most powerful organ sometimes the brain is overlooked for all the thinks it does. Our brain literally controls all of our bodily functions as well as the other organs in our body. For example there are many instances our brain has activated some abnormally response in high stressful moments that we normally could not perform. The "fight or flight response" is our body's primitive, automatic, inborn response that prepares the body to "fight" or "flee" from perceived attack, harm or threat to our survival. If our brain didn’t help us to come up with situations to help us to predict cases that might threaten our survival then we would have not survived. As I do not believe any other species has a brain that helps them predict and think of what would happen. At the end of the day our brain is a very complex organ that is not totally understood. As we are able to replace or live without all our organs but the brain is the only organ that hasn’t been transplanted or replicated.
