1. Why do you think a large number of people resist the theory of evolution by natural selection? What is it about Darwin's theory that makes you feel comfortable or uncomfortable? Be sure to elaborate on your reaction (pro or con).
-I think people resist the theory of evolution because people want to feel like their life has more meaning, rather than feeling like “All you’re here to do is pass your genetic code and die.” I think people want to have a higher sense of purpose, almost like a superhero in movies. People want to wake up one day to realize they were meant to save earth, I’m not saying it’s that extreme but, I am saying that people feel like there’s more to life than breeding. I feel comfortable with the theory of evolution. It makes sense and explains how humans, plants and animals interact. It also explains how the universe works. Even today, there are plants and some insect species that are adapting or evolving due to climate and human impact.
2. What do you think cannot be explained by evolution?
-I think with enough research evolution can explain a lot of questions people have. For example, I’ve always wondered in the future with the advances in the medical field if we would be able to manipulate our genes with medicine to the point when we do pass on our genetic code that we would pass on these genes that could prevent Diabetes to our offspring.
3. Provide three examples of eliminative materialism and how it works.
-Eliminative materialism, is when people believe in an idea that altered their understanding on how the body, world and life works which can be explained in physical properties, For example, when encountering a patient with multiple personality disorder, a long time ago people would believe that they were possessed by demons. In reality the patient is suffering from chemical imbalances and environmental factors. Or when I’m angry at my parents or my friends that can be explained to my body pumping out hormones and chemicals such as catecholamine and pumps out cortisol. Lastly when I fall in love, its human nature to pass on our genetic code. So, to feel “love” is more about what nature has intended for us to do the of feeling love is due to dopamine and oxytocin.
