(3) Why is understanding physics and the general rules of the universe so important in doing philosophy? These concepts are so important in philosophy and are derived from the controversy of what matter is. As stated in the book, “Matter Vs. Spirit”, “the conflict between science and spiritually primarily stems from a linguistic confusion over what the term “matter” means and what it ultimately implies (Diem-Lane 9.)” Understanding physics is understanding what something comes from and where or how it was derived. Then comes the idea of philosophy when something cannot be broken down to the specific physics of the matter. Physics encompasses the breakdown of matter and molecules from one aspect to another form of being and another. According to Sir Arthur Eddington stated, “the strange underpinnings inherent in quantum theory: “” Something unknown is doing what we don’t know.”” The four fundamentals forces in nature: 1) gravity; 2) electromagnetism; 3) strong nuclear force; and 4) weak nuclear force, according to the book the “Matter of Spirit”. These four forces in nature are also presented in the short film, Is the Universe Really Made Out of Rubber Bands? In this short film, not only are those presented, but we are introduced to the concept of “quantum mechanics”, which was developed from several scientists like Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, Erwin Schrodinger, Wolfgang Pauli and more. They introduced the breakdown of matter, and how each individual thing is composed of specific anatomic structures which creates different structures such as liquids versus solids and more.
(4) What is eliminative materialism? Eliminative materialism is a materialist position in the philosophy of the mind; the belief that certain states of mind do not exist. As said in the short film, “Eliminative Materialism: God Did It”, when there aren’t means of explanation through specific studies of sciences, they resort to the theory that, “God did it”. There are certain measures of science where we cannot support and or identify an exact answer, therein we leave it to the explanation that "God did it", because we cannot figure out why exactly something is the way that it is. After trying to find scientific evidence and means to something and the inability to explain something, results in the theory and beliefs that “God did it”. Eliminative materialism is revolved around what is matter, which is coincidentally derived from the word "mother". Mother is where one comes from and used as an analogy in the short film, "What is Matter" to better explain the significance and origin of matter.
