1. Why is the theory of evolution so important in understanding how human beings behave?
The theory of evolution is important to understanding how human beings behave because evolution is how we got to where we are now. In the book “The DNA of Consciousness”, it explains how Darwin’s theory of Natural Selection plays a role in how over time we have developed and adapted to different environments. The evolution of the mind has led us to eliminative materialism and the ability to use the different areas of science and math to determine a reason for something rather than a belief.
According to the video “The Genius of Charles Darwin- Part 1 Life, Darwin and Everything”, evolution explains why we are even here and almost everything that is known about life is because of it too. In the video he also goes on to explain and show to a group of teenagers, who believe things based on religion that there is scientific evidence of evolution. According to “The DNA of Consciousness” in the annotated readings section, it references a book written by Sean Carroll, it makes it clear that if more people did understand evolution they may behave differently. Carroll wrote about how we have polluted, destroyed the ecosystem, and how we are responsible for the extinction of many animals. In the same book and the video, “Pivotal Consciousness”, the theory of evolution helps to explain why we are able to question things and how we are able to think about things instead of always making unconscious decisions. This explains why in a profession such as law enforcement training is important, it trains the human brain to be able to react without thinking about it.
2. Which questions do you think evolutionary theory cannot answer?
While evolutionary theory can explain how things evolved years ago, it cannot answer definitively how the first organism or animal came to exist at all. I know that the earth was found to be much older than thought, but how did it all really start? In the book “The DNA of Consciousness”, I mentioned in the last question about how it talks about how we are able to think about the things we do. At a young age we are taught right from wrong. Then why do so many people often choose wrong over right? It seems that often times people make an active decision to do wrong and many do not suffer from any kind of mental illness. Maybe it is part of evolutionary theory due to possibly being learned behavior. Evolutionary theory explains somewhat how we behave but in the end it is just that, a theory. Theory is not fact until it can be physically proven.
